The Yellow Wallpaper is a critically acclaimed, award-winning dance-theater thriller based on the iconic story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This adaptation by sister team Caitlin and Megan Ort is brought to life through a genre-bending fusion of classic text and visceral choreography and has sold out performances at the Edinburgh and NYC Fringe Festivals.
The story follows Jane, a 19th-century woman suffering from postpartum depression, who is prescribed “The Rest Cure,” the era’s leading treatment for so-called “female hysteria.” Isolated for months in a room of yellow wallpaper and forbidden any social engagement, reading, writing, or mental stimulation, Jane slowly begins to lose her grip on reality. As the weeks pass, the wallpaper takes on a horrifying life of its own. Jane becomes convinced that there are women trapped within the walls, and that it is up to her to set them free.
